Could you introduce yourself to our readers: Who are you and where are you from?

I graduated in biology and I’m interested in palaeontology, but in profession I am a photographer in Turkey.

How did you first get started? What was that ‘I want to do this’ moment?

Before I started this work, 3D Photogrammetry was a new field for me and I didn’t know anything about it. One day my friend who knows I’m interested in fossils, sent me a message : “look at this, they did it !”

At first I didn’t understand after I clicked the link: I saw some fossils and they were in 3d and they used Sketchfab. It was the my first introduction to Sketchfab and 3D Photogrammetry.

After a couple of weeks I borrowed some fossils from my collector friends and I start to make fossils 3d…

Now I have almost 1.000 models. But most of them need to retouch with 3d softwares in order to correct details and make a most similar model with real one. after all process done I share them on Sketchfab. Sketchfab is fast, there is no useless details and the code or script I mean the engine behind the page is pretty good.

What is your drive for creating this collection?

Fossils are rare items and you can’t see them often on your usual life so I want to show fossils rather go to museum, they can see fossils and look at hundreds of million years ago just one click !

We don’t sale the fossils but some people call me and want me to do the same thing about their stuff, and I say why not cause people desire to see their interested products in 3D.

Can you tell us a bit about your workflow?

I use PhotoScanPro software. First I take some pictures at proper angles, it depends the volume, shape and area of fossils, with my DSLR. Then I put them in my computer and filter the blurry photos carefully, after about 45 min later i have the 3d model as well.

What are your plans for this collection? Are you considering 3D printing them?

I didn’t think it before but it can perform for education. So if i receive some demands from schools it can thinkable.

What would be your personal advice to someone getting started with 3D scanning?

Don’t take blurry shots !

If anyone need help they can reach me freely…

Thanks Onur!
