Community Contest: World of Warcraft: Legion Fan Art

Back to overview

The demons of the Burning Legion are pouring into world of Azeroth lead by a Dark Titan. How will this turn of events change the landscape of the world?

We’re really excited about the upcoming August release of World of Warcraft “Legion”. Being big fans of Blizzard and Warcraft, we wanted to celebrate the release by hosting a fan art contest.

From what we know, gloom and doom is about to hit the world in the worst way possible. So we thought it would be fun to to ask you all to imagine and create place or scene with an optional character in the form of a diorama inspired by Legion after the burning legion arrives.

Here’s a good example of what we’re looking for:

We’ve got an exciting chest of loot for you, and an amazing group of judges – both artists and leaders in the Warcraft scene. – Who will use all their expertise to help us pick the winners.

Enjoy!

We’ll post contest updates on the World of Warcraft Legion 2016 Contest forum. Start your own topic in the same forum where you document your work in progress (WIP). Post regular updates (with images and Sketchfab embeds), and be sure to mark which entry is your final submission. Tag your work in progress with #wowlegion-wip (and with #wow, for good measure ?).

Publish your final entry to your account, and tag it with #wowlegion-final and #wow.

Is this open to non US residents? E.g. UK?

  • empidocl says:

    Can I participate with a 3d character ?

    • You would need to create an environment or character diorama inspired by WOW Legion as described in the post.

      • Clint says:

Hey Michael, I just have a few questions- not that I wanna complicate the contest or whatever-

So when you say “Inspired by WoW Legion”- it doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to follow WoW’s Art Style, right? Like necessarily making the assets look like they fit in to the WoW Kit?

And is there any FAQ Section on maybe how the judging criteria is and all that? 😀

        Thanks for answering!

      • Clint says:

“And is there any FAQ Section on maybe how the judging criteria is and all that? ?”

I wanted to ask this cuz I wanted to know if we were judged based on technical stuff like topology and UV mappings. It would really help when it comes to budgeting my time while working in this project. 😀

        Thanks again!

      • No worries, I’m glad you’re asking questions. Do you need to match the art style. Not necessarily, everyone has their own style. I’d try to replicate the color scheme and make it believable that it would exist in that world.

      • Emily says:

        quoting from above:

“And is there any FAQ Section on maybe how the judging criteria is and all that?

…judged based on technical stuff like topology and UV mappings… ”

        Any answer on this?

      • The design needs to match the idea. For example if it’s a Warsong Camp theme, it should probably not have Draenei shapes/colors. Then the basics for top notch work such as quality of the textures is important and UVs should be tight and symmetrical.

  • Gabor says:

“No ripping of models from World of Warcraft”

That means literal ripping models from the game right?
I mean I can create an own Gul’dan for example?

  • Rybak says:

“Start your own topic in the same forum where you document your work in progress (WIP).”
Is it necessarily to create a topic in forum? Or publish the finished work enough?

  • Kevin says:

    Are 2 person entries allowed?
Eg. I make the character and my friend creates the environment.

  • Mattarias says:

Max 1 character, yes? So no hordes of demons? Haha. Gotta make sure!

  • Hailey says:

Should the theme directly related to devastating green waves of burning legion? I am thinking more about peaceful places in new zones of the Broken Isles.

  • Ernest says:

    Hi!
Could you be so kind to clarify “all entries must be original works of art inspired by World of Warcraft Legion” ?
I would like to make a scene with the Well from the Nightborne story: the starting concept won’t be mine (blizzard), but I want to edit the piece a bit and add stuff. Would that rule me out?
    Thank you for your patience

  • Jolivr says:

    Hello =DD
i’d like to know if the stories could be create in the atmosphere of wow, and show all new contend( my story), inside wow with the creation ?

  • Saelian says:

    Just a question :
A 360° Painting (I insist on painting) is it good ? Or MUST it be a 3D model ?
    Thanks. 🙂

    Example of a 360° painting : https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154172579671251&set=gm.520433714833819&type=3&theater (That’s not mine ^^)

  • Nyhm says:

Just a little question: The entries close the Monday, August 22, 2016 at 23:59PM, but I live in France, do I post my final render at this deadline? or do I have to be aware of the time difference?
    Thanks 🙂

Question, this contest is handpainted style (only diffuse texture) or with normal maps, metal, gloss or both are allowed?
